Hello friends and family,
On the 10th November this year, I will be running my very first 26.2 miles, at the Athens Authentic Marathon.
The route is known as one of the hardest major marathons due to its 20 kilometer hill right in the middle. It's safe to say, when I make it to the top, I'll roll down into Athens like some sort of legless tumbleweed.
You might ask, What are you really running from?... But the real question is what will I be running for? As well as putting my body through the trenches, I will be raising money for SkyWay Charity to take a group of fantastic young people on a summer residential next year.
I have been a part of SkyWay for nearly 3 years and during that time, I have seen the numerous benefits of overnight residentials for young people. From roasting their first marshmallow, to spotting a rare caterpillar, summer residentials are a real source of joy and curiosity for inner city kids. Outdoor trips have been proven to broaden young people's horizons and foster new interests. They also offer young people valuable opportunities to connect, learn, and engage with nature, improving their wellbeing in the process (1).
The Athens Authentic is the original route that some nutter - Pheidippides - ran in 490BC from Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory over Persia. I think my reason is equally as epic, although I don't intend on dying like old Phidi did, or did he?
Head over to the stories page on the website to get a flavour of what else SkyWay has on offer.
See you at the finish line,
Conor x
